History

In 1815, while visiting "Ragged Schools" in Philadelphia, Miss Isabella Neill became interested in establishing a similar school for education of the destitute in Hagerstown.  Together with three other ladies she began to teach local poor children almost immediately.  Children between the ages of 5 and 12 were admitted to the school to learn reading, spelling, arithmetic and geography.

The school was supported by the "Older Citizens" of Hagerstown.  The Nursery was incorporated in 1819 and thus allowed to receive bequests.  In 1842 the Nursery's present site was built with a legacy donated by Matthias Hammond.  The Nursery was originally known as "The Charity School".

Today the Nursery provides a safe, happy, stimulating pre-school for children of working parents or guardians. Our staff keep their credentials updated for teaching the "Stem Program" (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).  Social Service and inspected on an annual bases.  We are also part of the MSDE (Maryland State Department of Education) Food Program.  We provide the children with nutritious, hot meals cooked daily in our kitchen.  They include breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack.

We are now over 202 years of age.
